Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Description

The Erasmus Mundus Programme is a European co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education. It aims to enhance the quality of European education and to promote intercultural understanding through co-operation with 'third countries'.

'Third countries' are those countries which are not European Union (EU) Member States, EEA-EFTA countries (Iceland, Leichtenstein, and Norway), nor EU applicant countries ( presently Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Turkey).

EM Scholarships for Non-European Students (Action 2):

The programme intends to promote European co-operation as well as strengthen international links in higher education by supporting high-quality European masters courses which enable students and visiting scholars from outside Europe to engage in postgraduate study at European universities.

Highly qualified students who wish to apply for the European Master of Science in International Health Programme are encouraged to apply for Erasmus Mundus scholarships. To be eligible for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship for Non-Europeans (Action 2) a student must

Be a resident of a 'third country' as defined above.

Not have carried out his/her main activities (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the past five years in an EU country nor an EU applicant country.

Criteria for Erasmus Mundus Scholarship applicants:

  • Excellent first degree (a minimum of a bachelor degree with honours or the equivalent) with excellent grades and/or other study results
  • Verified excellent quality of the institution where the first degree was obtained
  • Strongly convincing letter of motivation
  • Strongly convincing recommendation by an academic and/or professional body
  • Clear idea of research to be carried out and submitted as a thesis proposal
  • Professional experience
  • Internationally recognised English proficiency certificate equivalent to a TOEFL score of 550/213/79-80 or an IELTS score of 6.

Scholarship awards for the 2008/2009 academic year are 24.200,00 Euro per selected student. This amount is to be applied towards the students' tuition fees, study-related travel expenses, and living expenses.

Applicants who wish to be considered for an Erasmus Mundus (non-European/Action 2) Scholarship for the 2008/2009 academic year should submit an application along with the required documents to:

In order to be taken into consideration, a complete application package must be received in Berlin by December 15th 2007.

EM Scholarships for European Students (Action 3):

The programme intentions are to support the sharing and dissemination of knowledge and expertise in the field of    International Health beyond Europe through the exchange of students and scholars, seminars, internet and other media as well as to promote the social capacity, transferable skills and language abilities of outgoing European students. Students will follow the same study tracks as non-European students, but are required to conduct the last third of their studies including thesis work in one of our four non-European partner institutions.

Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China
Swiss Tropical Institute, Basel, Switzerland

To be eligible for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship for Europeans(Action 3) the applicant must:

  • Be a resident of a European Union Member Country.
  • Willing to take the elective courses and to conduct a supervised thesis at one of our non-European partner institutions.

Criteria for Erasmus Mundus Scholarship applicants:

  • Excellent first degree with excellent grades and/or other study results;
  • Strongly convincing letter of motivation/statement of intent;
  • Good initial performance in the tropEd core course;
  • Strongly convincing recommendation by an academic and/or professional body, preferably from senior EM consortium academic staff;
  • Professional experience
  • Internationally recognised English proficiency certificate equivalent to a TOEFL score of 550/213/79-80 or an IELTS sore of 6.

Scholarship awards for the 2007/2008 academic year are 3.100,00 Euro per selected student. This amount is to be applied towards the students' tuition fees, study-related travel expenses and living expenses.

Applicants who wish to be considered for an Erasmus Mundus (European/Action 3) Scholarship for the 2007/2008 academic year should submit an application along with the required documents to:
